ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. released his latest two-round mock draft, where he sees the Chargers addressing the offensive side of the ball in Rounds 1 and 2.
While many believe Los Angeles could take a skill player with their first pick, Kiper has them solidifying the offensive line with the selection of North Dakota State’s Grey Zabel.
Los Angeles would love for one of the top three receivers or top two tight ends to be sitting there when it is on the clock. And there’s a chance the Chargers reach slightly for someone like Emeka Egbuka (Ohio State) or Luther Burden III (Missouri). I lean toward a better value move: Pick an impact lineman for the run game now, and wait until Day 2 for a deep pool of playmakers. Zabel played all over in college, with starts at both tackle positions and both guard spots. He’s a tone-setter who drives defenders off the ball, and he could help open rush lanes at left guard.
The Chargers were active in retooling the interior part of the offensive line, signing Mekhi Becton and Andre James while bringing back Bradley Bozeman. Becton will man the right guard spot, and James, Bozeman, and Zion Johnson are expected to compete for the starting center job. Zabel, who has experience at multiple positions on the line, would be able to start from Day 1.
In the second round, Kiper sends LSU tight end Mason Taylor to the Bolts.
The Chargers signed Tyler Conklin, and drafting Taylor would fill out an intriguing tight end room for quarterback Justin Herbert. Taylor is a big target at 6-foot-5 and 251 pounds. He caught 55 passes last season with just one drop.
Despite the addition of Tyler Conklin, they still need to find a long-term option at the position. Taylor isn’t going to offer much as a blocker, but he will be a reliable receiver, possessing the route-running skills and strong hands. He could step in and make an impact in the passing game from his rookie season.
