Chopper chair by Massimo Buster Minale for Buster + Punch

Dezeen Showroom: architect and industrial designer Massimo Buster Minale has redesigned his homeware brand Buster + Punch’s Chopper chair with futuristic black steel framing and leather cushioning.

Minale adapted the chair’s original rattan design in celebration of the brand’s ten year anniversary, creating a new iteration with low slung proportions and a bent tubular frame made from steel.

Instead of woven rattan, sheets of thick full-grain leather are used to make the chair’s backrest and seat, which is secured with belt-like straps underneath. The patina of the leather is designed to age with use over time and can be replaced if desired.

Minale referenced his passion for custom motorbikes in the chair’s design, referring to the way a motorcycle’s frame supports its engine block in the connection between the chair’s frame and its leather padding.

Chopper is both stackable and shipped flat-packed, saving 75 per cent of the packaging and space required by the original chair, according to the brand.

It was originally created in 1973 by the designer’s father Marcello Minale, who frequently worked with iconic brands including Valentino, Harrods, Armani and Fendi.

Chopper will be unveiled as part of Buster + Punch’s event A Decade of Details during London Design Festival in September 2023.
