DFB Hire Nagelsmann As Germany Coach For 2024 Euros, BILD Reports

The DFB (Germany ‘s football association) has reached an agreement in principle with Julian Nagelsmann to become new head coach of Germany’s men’s national team, Bild, a well-sourced German tabloid, reported Tuesday at midday local time. Nagelsmann will coach “Die Mannschaft” up to and including at the Euros 2024, which begin in just nine month’s time. The tournament will be hosted by Germany.

The DFB will pay Nagelsmann, 36, a monthly salary of around €400,000 ($428,000), according to the Bild report. This equates to an annual salary of around €4.8 million ($5.1 million), although it remains unclear if Nagelsmann will stay on as Germany manager after the Euros 2024, which take place in ten different German cities between June 14 and July 14 next year.

Nagelsmann to take pay cut to become Germany coach

For Nagelsmann, taking over as Germany coach will mean a pay cut from being unemployed. Although the 36-year-old was dismissed by Bayern Munich in March 2023, his contract with the German club ran until 2026, netting him an annual salary of around €6.8 million ($7.3 million), according to Bild.

Previously, the Bavarian native had only coached at club level. At just 28 years old, he took over as manager of Bundesliga club Hoffenheim in February 2016, leading the club from 17th in the table — a relegation spot — to 15th by the end of the 2015/2016 season.

The following year, Nagelsmann’s Hoffenheim side came 4th in the Bundesliga and qualified for the Europa League. One season after that, Hoffenheim qualified for the Champions League.

After coaching Hoffenheim between 2016 and 2019, Nagelsmann took over as manager of RB Leipzig, leading the East German club to the semi-final of the Champions League in the 2019/20 season. Then, Bayern came calling.

DFB select Nagelsmann in time for match v USMNT

Germany’s next international fixtures are in October, when the Euro 2024 hosts travel to North America, where Germany will play two friendly fixtures against the U.S. men’s national team and Mexico.

Previously, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and interim manager Rudi Voller said that the next national team manager will be instated before the October international break.

As such, it is expected that Nagelsmann will select the national team squad that travels to North America — and coach “Die Mannschaft” against the USMNT and “El Tri”.
