Dream comes true: Savion Williams wanted to get picked by Packers

Savion Williams wanted to end up in Green Bay with Matt LaFleur, and his dream came true when Brian Gutekunst and the Packers picked him at No. 87 overall in third round of the 2025 draft.

The TCU receiver told everyone pre-draft that landing with the Packers was his preference.

“That whole week before I got drafted, everybody was always asking me, ‘What’s one team you want to get picked by? Who would you want to get picked by?’ I told them, it’d be Green Bay,” Williams said at rookie minicamp on Friday. “That’s where I want to go. Just seeing the area code number pop up and just grinning the whole time. Knowing I was going to be in Green Bay was just a dream.”

Williams, who grew up in a small town in Texas, listed playing for LaFleur, watching Aaron Rodgers as a kid and “being a cheesehead” as top reasons why he wanted to land in Green Bay.

Williams won’t get to play with Rodgers, but LaFleur should have the creative playcalling chops to get the most out of a versatile weapon like Williams, who played wide receiver, running back and Wildcat quarterback during his final season at TCU. Williams has obvious gadget value entering the NFL, and he’s excited about getting to do more traditional wide receiver things with the Packers.

“Whatever my team needs me to do, I’m going to do,” said Williams, who played quarterback in high school.

Williams said he can’t wait to play with a “great quarterback” like Jordan Love, who reached out to him after getting picked.

The Packers brought Williams to Green Bay for a pre-draft visit, and he fell in love with the small town feel.

“When I came on my visit, it felt like home,” Williams said. “I’m from a small town, and this is small town type good vibe and everything. Just being around here and seeing how tight the town was and hearing how the fans are and everything. I like that, I like small town stuff like that.”
