Prior to emerging as a Heisman winner at LSU and the Offensive Rookie of the Year with the Washington Commanders, quarterback Jayden Daniels started his career with Arizona State University. He had some extremely strong moments as a Sun Devil, but transferred an investigation into recruiting violations that implicated his mother.
That had social media wondering if his comment on the Instagram post of elite recruit Brayden Burries, a five-star combo guard from the Roosevelt High School (Eastvale, Calif.) basketball team, was directed toward ASU, or if he was simply celebrating the athlete who plays just 30 miles away from Daniels’ high school.
Here was the comment, tweeted out by PHNX Wildcats:
Daniels was always very cordial after leaving ASU, telling 247Sports that he “always enjoyed” his time in Tempe. “I love Coach Herm [Edwards] and those guys over there, but just for my career, my future, I decided to go somewhere else just so I can reach into that untapped potential,” he said.
He also said: “I hope they do well this season. I will never pray on their downfall.”
With that, it looks like he’s more so celebrating the success of a local athlete and the commitment to an Arizona university.
Burries was one of the best high school basketball players this season, averaging 29.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.9 steals per game for the Mustangs, who won the California championship and finished the season No. 2 in the Super 25 national rankings. He is ranked the No. 11 overall player in the class and chose the Wildcats over Alabama, Tennessee, Oregon and USC.
With Burries joining five-star recruits Koa Peat and Dwayne Aristode, as well as Bryce James, Arizona has one of the top-tier recruiting classes of 2025.
