Long-time Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker is preparing to battle for his job after the team spent a sixth-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft on Arizona’s Tyler Loop.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh was adamant any decision about Tucker’s future would be related to his on-field performance.
“Every decision we make has to be based on football,” Harbaugh explained to reporters. “There’s a lot of layers to that. You’ve got a rookie kicker and here you took him in the sixth round, early in the sixth round. He’s a talented guy. Just from a football standpoint – salary cap, all the different things that you just take into consideration – whatever we decide to do over the next few weeks will be based on football.”
Harbaugh’s comments come as the NFL investigates accusations of sexual misconduct against Tucker from more than a dozen massage therapists. Tucker has denied the allegations, calling them “simply not true.”
The Ravens have said they will allow the NFL to finish its investigation before making a decision about Tucker’s status based on his off-the-field issues.
“I would just say from a standpoint of the investigation and all that, I mean we don’t know anything,” Harbaugh said. “We haven’t been given any information, and as it should be. It’s all done the way it’s done. So, we don’t know anything along those lines, so we can’t make any decisions based on that.”
While the Ravens wait for that situation to play out, there appears to be a legitimate kicker competition brewing in Baltimore. Loop became the first-ever kicker drafted by the Ravens upon his selection with the 186th pick. He is known for his powerful leg, and he made 6 of 9 kicks from 50-plus yards last season at Arizona, including a 62-yarder.
Tucker remains the most accurate kicker in NFL history and holds the record for the longest field goal ever made (66 yards). That said, he’s coming off a season during which he made a career-low 73.3% of his field goal attempts. Prior to 2024, he had never made less than 82.5% of his kicks.
Tucker has been in the facility working out the last couple of weeks, according to Harbaugh, but will have a chance to compete directly with Loop beginning on May 27, when Ravens OTAs begin.
Tucker, 35, is in the second year of a four-year, $24 million contract extension he signed with the Ravens in 2022. Baltimore can create $4.2 million in 2025 cap space if it trades or releases Tucker after June 1.
