Scottie Scheffler will miss the PGA Tour’s 2025 season-opening tournament, The Sentry in Maui, after suffering a puncture wound to his right hand from a broken glass on Christmas Day. The injury will sideline him for three to four weeks.
Scheffler’s agent, Blake Smith, broke the news in a statement issued through the PGA Tour.
“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” the statement said. “Small glass fragments remained in the palm, which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.”
The Sentry is scheduled to be played Jan. 2-5 at Maui’s Kapalua Resort. The American Express will be played from Jan. 16-19, in La Quinta, California, the season’s first tournament on the United States mainland.
Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the World Golf Ranking, was recently honored with his third consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year award, the first player to do that since Tiger Woods from 2005-07. He held the No. 1 ranking for every week of 2024, something last achieved by Woods in 2009.
In 2024, Scheffer won nine tournaments and seven PGA Tour titles, including the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Masters, the RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament, the Travelers Championship, the Tour Championship, the Hero World Challenge and a gold medal at the Paris Summer Olympics.
The year was also memorable for Scheffler being arrested, charged with a felony and booked into custody outside Valhalla Golf Club before the PGA Championship. All charges were eventually dropped.
