Donald Trump’s marriage to Melania Trump has been scrutinized over and over again in the press, but one political insider may have revealed the real — and very fascinating — dynamics between them. Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emanuel Macron, shared her perspective after interacting with the couple while Donald Trump was president.

Macron doesn’t seem to think that the former first lady’s absence on the campaign trail means that much, according to her interview with Paris Match. She believes that it is Melania who is calling the shots behind the scenes. “Melania Trump is very sweet. But she has the upper hand over her husband,” Macron shared. “When, at a dinner party, she taps on her watch, her husband understands that it is time to get up and leave. And he complies. She has a strong personality.”
Even though Macron admitted she is much closer to current First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, she still has kind things to say about Melania. The French politician’s wife previously described her to Le Monde as “actually really fun” and someone who “laughs very easily, at everything.” Macron also felt bad at how “constrained” Melania was in her Washington, D.C. life. “She can’t even open a window at the White House. She can’t go outside. She’s much more constrained than I am. I go out every day in Paris,” she added.
Donald Trump has given his voter base hints that Melania has strong opinions about his life out on the campaign trail, admitting that she criticizes his political theatrics. “She says, ‘Darling, I love you so much, but this is not presidential when you do the weightlifting, this is not presidential, or when you do the swimming thing, it’s not and you know, I understand, or when you dance off the stage,’” he told an audience at a rally in Iowa last month. Melania sounds like a force to be reckoned with and Donald Trump isn’t going to mess around with that.
