Two killed, three injured in fiery wrong-way crash on US 27

SOUTH BAY — Two people were killed early Sunday in a fiery wrong-way crash on U.S. 27 near Clewiston, police said.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said a man driving a 2017 Ford Van with Florida plates was heading north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 27 near Mile Marker 85 at about 2:35 a.m. At the same time, a 2023 Chevy Suburban being driven by Damion Jones, 24, of South Bay, was heading south.

Neither vehicle took evasive action as they approached collision, the sheriff’s office said. The Ford van “violently collided” with the Chevy, rotated clockwise and came to rest in a northbound lane, where it burst into flames.

The Chevy also rotated clockwise after the crash and came to rest in the grass median facing north, deputies said. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue declared Jones and the driver of the Ford dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford has not been identified.

Three passengers in Jones’ car were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center. One of them, an unidentified male, is in critical condition. The other two passengers, Alt’Lecia Johnson, 23, of South Bay, and Fa’Quandria Nation, 24, of West Palm Beach, were in serious condition.
